History of Hajipir Army Goodwill School Trehgam
Foundation and Early Years
Hajipir Brigade established Hajipir Army Public School in the year 1984 at Khrew, Anantnag, with the primary objective of providing quality education to the wards of Army personnel. Initially, the institution functioned exclusively for Army families, and the teaching staff mainly comprised officers’ wives. During its early years, the school offered classes only up to Nursery level.Following the relocation of The Hajipir Brigade to Trehgam, the school was also shifted to the Trehgam Garrison. At that stage, the administration and teaching staff continued to be drawn from Army personnel and their families. Subsequently, two local teachers were appointed, marking the beginning of community participation in the institution.
Reopening and Educational Expansion
Due to the outbreak of militancy in the region, the school was closed in 1997. After remaining non operational for nearly two years, the institution was reopened in 1999 under the aegis of The Hajipir Brigade Education Branch. At the time of reopening, the school had approximately 110 students and classes were conducted only for Nursery and LKG students.Considering the prevailing security situation, the school functioned from within the Trehgam Garrison. The Brigade Education Branch remained solely responsible for the administration, functioning, and academic management of the institution.
Establishment Under Operation Sadbhavana
In the year 2002, the school was allotted an independent campus at Sheikh Pora Bala and was re established as Hajipir Army Goodwill School under Operation Sadbhavana. On 15 August 2002, the institution was formally inaugurated with only two buildings and classes up to Nursery and LKG.Over the years, the school gradually gained the trust and confidence of the local population. Student enrolment increased steadily, leading to the introduction of additional classes. By the year 2008, the school had successfully expanded up to Class VIII.
Infrastructure Development
Several developmental initiatives were undertaken under Operation Sadbhavana for strengthening the educational infrastructure of the school.
Major developments included:
• Construction of three additional classrooms in 2008
• Expansion of academic and administrative infrastructure
• Introduction of four civil buses in August 2010 for transportation of students from far flung areas
• Establishment of a fully equipped Computer Laboratory in May 2011
• Introduction of basic computer education for students
Recent Developments and Modernization
From the year 2022 onwards, the development and modernization of the school gained significant pace with continuous infrastructure improvement and student welfare initiatives.
Recent developmental works include:
• Complete renovation and modernization of the Computer Laboratory
• Upgradation of digital learning facilities for students
• Renovation and expansion of the School Library
• Modernization of the Morning Assembly Area
• Improvement of student learning and activity spaces
• Construction of a dedicated Lunch Shed for students to provide a comfortable and hygienic dining space
These developments reflect the institution’s commitment towards providing a modern, student friendly, and academically enriching environment.
Unique Character of the Institution
As reflected in its history, the school began as a small educational initiative exclusively for the children of Army personnel. Over time, it gradually opened its doors to the local population as a gesture of goodwill and community outreach.
The institution became a platform for interaction between the Army and local communities, presenting the humanitarian and educational commitment of the Indian Army towards the people of the region.
Initially, only a few local residents were employed for subsidiary tasks, while the teaching responsibilities were handled entirely by officers’ wives. Later, in response to repeated requests from prominent citizens of neighbouring villages, the school allowed limited admission of local boys and girls.
With the changing social and security environment during the 1990s, the school transitioned into an institution primarily serving the local civilian population. Local civilians were also appointed as teaching staff, strengthening community participation and educational accessibility.
Since 2002, under Operation Sadbhavana, Hajipir Army Goodwill School has continued to work towards providing quality education, character building, discipline, and holistic development to students from Trehgam and surrounding areas.
Legacy and Vision
Popularly known as HAGS, Hajipir Army Goodwill School has evolved from a small Army educational initiative into one of the prominent educational institutions of the region.
